Discover this arduous yet inviting Swiss valley. You’ll be truly amazed by the unspoilt nature and the authentic villages of this region steeped in tradition. Whether you’re travelling on foot, by car or via public transport, the valley is easily accessible. Not be surprised to surprise yourself: In Ticino diving enthusiasts can go underwater in lakes, rivers and alpine lakes. The bridge "ponte romano" also called "Ponte dei salti" (jump bridge) crosses the Verzasca river in Lavertezzo and is a typical medieval construction made of stone. After its partial destruction occured in 1868 it has been reconstructed in 1960. Close to the bridge you can admire a Chapel from the XVIII century. One of the most spectacular places to dive, is in the crystal clear waters of the Verzasca Valley, that offers different swimming opportunities. The best-known river basins are located in Lavertezzo and in Brione Verzasca. The most famous for underwater activities are the Misura river basin, the Posse river basin and the Salti river basin. The river, with its emerald and crystal clear waters, however, can hide hazards. Therefore, pay attention to the warning notices posted locally. Village Brione The first attestations of the presence of the village of Brione Verzasca date back to 1200. The toponym seems to be of Celtic origin and derives from briga, the plural is brigoni, and means hill, mountain. The name is therefore linked to the imposing rock (Gasg or Gaggio) that overlooks the village. The town hall The building dates back to the beginning of the 17th century and was owned by the architect Giovanni Gada. He left it as a donation to the municipality and therefore it became a municipal house and school. In the Middle Ages Brione was a team of the community of Verzasca; later it formed a neighborhood of its own, organized into two teams with Gerra, which broke away in 1852. Brione was the main village of the upper valley: alternating with Vogorno it presented candidates for the positions of podestà and lieutenant. In Brione there is the so-called Marcacci castle, a fortress-house built by the Marcacci family in the 17th century. The church of the Blessed Virgin of the Assumption stands on the ruins of a chapel from 1295, enlarged in the 17th century and restored in the 19th; valuable frescoes from the 14th (Rimini Giotto school) and 15th centuries are preserved there. The parish of Brione separated from Vogorno before 1518; a school chaplaincy was founded in 1644. The main activities of the population were agriculture, sheep farming and periodic emigration, well documented from the 17th century; since the 14th century the inhabitants wintered with their livestock in the Magadino plain. At the end of the 20th century the primary sector absorbed less than a fifth of the active population of the municipality; since 1873 two granite quarries (stone industry) have been exploited with local labour.
