How to Write a Joke… When the World Isn’t Funny | Kevin Bleyer | TEDxStanford

How does a former Daily Show writer who some say wrote the joke President Obama told that was the catalyst for Donald Trump’s run for president, stay funny in a turbulent, unfunny world? In teaching us how to tell a joke, Bleyer says satire isn’t dead, but warns it is kind of sick. Kevin Bleyer is a Stanford grad and an Emmy and Peabody Award-winning writer. He spent the last decade as a writer for The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, and the previous decade for Dennis Miller and Politically Incorrect with Bill Maher. As a speechwriter, Bleyer contributed to the (funnier) speeches of President Barack Obama, including all his addresses to the annual White House Correspondents Dinner. The bestselling author of Me the People, Bleyer is the co-author, with Governor Bill Richardson, of How to Sweet-Talk a Shark, recounting the pair’s humanitarian mission to North Korea. As the cofounder of Pilot Media, he has skewered headlines direct from Kyrgyzstan and Macedonia and beyond. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
