TAIPEI, TAIWAN - Researchers from Cornell Medicine and National Taiwan University (NTU) in coordination with other institutions around the world have published a study that could assist with the early detection of the spread of cancer cells. The spread of cancer cells is known as metastasis and according to professor Shen Tang-long, is the leading cause of death in cancer patients around the world. The discovery supports a hypothesis known as “the seed and soil” theory of metastasis, proposed by a London doctor back in 1889. The theory is that cancer cells are like seeds, which are actively seeking fertile soil to spread to and sprout. The subject of the research investigation are exosomes, tumor-derived proteins, released by cancer cells into the bloodstream. The exosomes head to other areas of the body and other organs, laying the molecular groundwork for cancer cells to form and grow. Physicians who are able to track the exosomes would be able to predict where cancer cells will metastasize to in the future.
