Directed since its foundation in 1953 by Helmuth Rilling, it is composed of selected trained singers whose numbers vary according to the forces required for particular works. The choir‘s instrumental counterpart is the Bach Collegium Stuttgart, whose highly professional and stylistically versatile players are now taken both from Germany and abroad. As founder and director of the International Bachakademie Stuttgart, Helmuth RiIling is in demand worldwide as a conductor – and above all as a specialist of the oratorio. He has conducted all the major American orchestras, the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, and has given a number of enthusiastically received performances of Johann Sebastian Bach‘s St. Matthew Passion with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. To celebrate the Bach Year 2000 he commissioned four new settings of the Passion from four contemporary composers and himself directed the world premiere performances of these in Stuttgart. Underlying the work of this conductor – the recipient of many awards for his involvement in bringing together people from different races through his musical commitment – is the notion that ‘music should set people thinking‘.
