Kazankina had alreday sliced an astonishing 5.4 seconds off of the previous 1500m WR 4 years previously in 1976,and another second off of that time earlier in the 1980 season.Here,running in Zurich after the Olympic Games,she lowered it another two and half seconds!This was faster than the great Paavo Nurmi ever managed the distance.Unfortunately there will always be doubts over her times,along with many of that generation of athletes with the rumours,founded or otherwise,of state contrlolled drug administration to sportsmen and women in the Eastern Bloc.In 1984 ,having refused a drug test,she was banned for 18 months and retired.
