These are some of the toys that are finalists for the Toy Industry Association's Toy of the Year. "For a toy to be eligible for the Toy of the Year awards it needs to be currently sold at retail and introduced in the last two years," said Adrienne Appell of the Toy Industry Association. There's also a new Elmo doll that hugs. "Elmo is one of those characters in toys that has enduring value and what the toy industry has done it has always brought new play value to Elmo year after year," said Carter Keithley, Toy Industry Association. "I remember a few years ago seeing an Elmo that I thought must have more computing power than the Apollo spaceship. This year it's got even more." Also nominated is a Disney doll that talks to animals, named Sofia and a bracelet making kit. There are several nominated games that blur the lines between video games and figurines, such as the Battroborg fighting robots, toy robots controlled with a joystick. Toy sales are up one percent so far this year, according to the market research firm NPD Group. Says researcher David Riley: "Year to date the toy industry overall is performing well at retail up one percent. What's really driving that this year is the doll category which is performing very well. One of the primary drivers at retail this year and through the holidays. Items like Monster High, Lalaloopsy, My Little Pony is doing very well, that category in particular is up 6 percent for the year and we expect it to do just as well over the holidays." The Toy of the Year nominees are voted on by toy makers, retailers, media and consumers. Winning products are selected based on popular votes from consumers and announced in February.
