Phoenix Public Library Guided Tour

Welcome to the Phoenix Public Library! This guided tour will familiarize you with some of the basic information you need to know about our library. From our homepage seen here, you can access information on our library system using the menu found at the top of all our pages. Each page has relevant information and as you can see our homepage includes links to upcoming events, local information, and of course, an option to search our catalog. But before we dive into finding a book, let’s find a library branch nearby. From the top menu, click on “Locations and Hours”. This page provides a listing of our branches, their street address, and their hours. On the right, you can zoom in on the map to find a location close to you. If you live near West 59th Avenue and Indian School Road, you can zoom the map into that area and see there are two blue pins nearby. Clicking on the nearest one shows you it is the Palo Verde branch, and clicking on the second tells you it is the Desert Sage branch. Since the Palo Verde branch is closer, you can then scroll down the page to see what hours it is open. Now let’s take a look at how we obtain a library card. From the top of the menu click on “Services for You” and then click on the left hand side “Borrowing Items”. From the borrowing items page, you can click on “Library Cards” to get information about obtaining a card. Or you can also click on “Borrowing Policies” to find out the length of time that you can borrow a book. Now that you know how to find your nearest branch location, how to get a library card, and how long you can borrow a book from the library, let’s look at some helpful search tools. If you hover your mouse over “Browse the Library” the drop down menu lists items such as Books, Movies, Music, etc. Let’s click on “Books”. The Books search page offers a search box. If you type in a book title, for example “Lord of the Flies” and click the “books” button, a new page will open with a listing of books that match that search. For more advanced searching, you can put your keywords in the search box, and from the search results page, you can use the options on the left side to narrow it down by format, fiction or non-fiction, language, locations and authors. With all the information provided so far, you are ready to start searching for books, but what if you need to do some research for an assignment? The library offers a wide range of resources for all your research needs. From the main menu, hover over “Browse the Library” and choose “Learning & Research”. From this page, you can choose a subject area to research, such as Ancestry or Health and Wellness or you can scroll to the bottom and choose “Resources A to Z”. This page lists all of our online resources that you can access from home or on the library’s computers. Be sure to note that some resources are only available from a library computer. As you can see here, Ancestry.com and the Arizona Guide to Grants are only available from the library computers. This concludes our guided tour of important library information and resources. If you should need additional help, please feel free to email us, call us, or visit us at any of the 17 locations during business hours.
