It was one of the first countries to develop a culture around wine, spreading the vine throughout Europe. After losing recognition for their wines internationally for a while, Greece is again an exciting wine country producing distinctive styles from autochthonous grape varieties. Today I am going to taste some of the best wines from Greece to see what is really going on in the country that brought us Dionysus and Resina. Greece is a fairly small wine-growing country with 64,000 ha of vineyards. According to Wines of Greece, the vineyards are farmed by over 180.000 growers but most of them only do this as a side business. There are more than 1,200 wineries and the county works with hundreds of autochthonous grape varieties – varieties that can only be found here. Roughly 90% of the plantings are indigenous, which makes it more difficult to understand Greece and to pronounce the wine names but it also makes the country exciting to discover. The varieties include the white Savatiano grape – the most widely planted grape. Moschofilero which is pink-skinned. Assyrtiko, probably the most highly regarded white grape while Agiorgitiko is the most planted red grape variety. Xinomavro is considered the Barolo of Greece and there are many more that you should taste.
